Good candles start with knowing the temperature

A sunken centre, a white bloom on the surface, or a scent that fades once the wax has set are the most common signs of trouble in home candle making. Often the cause is wax that was overheated or poured at the wrong moment. The difference can be a matter of a few degrees, and you cannot judge it by eye.

The Bilovit thermometer shows it straight away: you know when the wax is fully melted, when to add fragrance oil, and when to pour into the mould. Useful for soy, beeswax and coconut wax, for paraffin and stearin, and for homemade balms and salves. A simple, proven design in glass, metal and plastic, with no electronics or batteries.

How to use

1. Before first use, wash the thermometer in hot water with soap, rinse and dry thoroughly to remove any residue from manufacturing.
2. Clip the thermometer to the rim of the container.
3. Submerge the probe in the wax to a depth of about 6.35 cm (2 1/2 inches), without touching the bottom of the container, for an accurate reading.
4. Watch the reading while heating and remove the container from the heat source once the right temperature is reached.
5. Before pouring into the mould, let the wax cool to the pouring temperature recommended by the wax manufacturer.
6. When finished, hold the ball on the mounting clip to safely lift the thermometer out of the container.

Care and cleaning

Hand wash only. Do not put in the dishwasher.

Storage

Keep the thermometer dry, protected from knocks and breakage, ideally stored separately rather than loose among other accessories.

Precautions

• Do not place the thermometer in an oven or microwave.
• When removing it from hot wax, hold only the ball on the mounting clip.
• The glass construction is fragile - protect the thermometer from drops and knocks.
• Do not immerse a hot thermometer in cold water - a sudden change in temperature can damage the glass.
• Keep out of reach of children.
